Neuroscience Is Validating Contemplative Practice at the Network Level
A meta-analysis in Nature Neuroscience synthesized 28 fMRI studies on experienced meditators and found consistent patterns of reduced default mode network coupling with increased salience network integration. These neural signatures correlate strongly with subjective reports of diminished self-referential thinking, suggesting that ancient contemplative traditions were identifying real neurological shifts through introspective methods alone. The findings bridge a long-standing gap between empirical neuroscience and phenomenological accounts of consciousness transformation.
